Emergency Medical Responder Class (formerly known as First Responder)

Did you know there was a way to take Emergency Medical Responder (formerly called First Responder) and only have to be on campus 4 days a semester?  For the first time, EMR is now offered in a hybrid format.  The lectures and course work will be online through Blackboard and the dates that follow are required lab practice days. The lab will meet in CHP 2011 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Feb. 12, 2014, March 5, 2014, April 1, 2014 and April 22, 2014.

If you are interested in taking this course it is listed on the NWACC Class Schedule as:

CRN 21021 EMTA 1013 Emergency Medical Responder.

Farmington Center Hours of Operation

With no classes in session, Farmington Center staff hours will be 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. beginning on Wednesday, Dec. 18 through Friday, Jan. 10.

As a reminder:   Under a plan approved by the College, the Farmington Center closes each semester beginning on the second day after grades are due at the Registrar’s Office for that term and reopens one week before classes begin the next term.  This means that the Farmington Center will be closed beginning on Monday, Dec. 23 and will reopen on Monday, Jan. 6.

Signs will be posted directing anyone needing immediate assistance to the Washington County Center.

We have a guest keynote speaker, Dr. “Sandy” Shugart, president of Valencia College.  Valencia college is the largest community college in the nation. Ozark Regional Transit – Additional Services

Beginning Jan. 13, 2014, ORT routes 44 and 46 will provide additional services to NWACC.

The route 44 will be driving to NWA Mall prior to beginning its route in Rogers to pick up any NWACC students or staff. The departure time from NWA Mall will be 6:10 a.m. with an expected arrival time at NWACC Bentonville of 6:45 a.m.

Route 46 will be driving to NWACC Springdale prior to beginning its route in Bentonville to pick up any NWACC students or staff. The departure time from NWACC Springdale will be 6:25 a.m. with an expected arrival time at NWACC Bentonville of 6:45 a.m.

Sam’s Club Invitation to Shop

Sam’s Club has generously offered all faculty and staff the opportunity to shop without a membership between now and January 31, 2014. The attached invitation is a sample. Staff Council Craft Hour

Staff Council will be hosting the annual Staff Council Craft Hour today in the Becky Paneitz Student Center, room 108 at 2:30 p.m.

In addition to the opportunity to spending some creating some delightful holiday crafts, Staff Council will fill you in on some of the changes to the Staff  Council Constitution and provide some healthy snacks. 

Test of IT Electrical Generator

There will be a test of the electrical generator for the IT Data Center on Thursday evening, Dec. 19, between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. While we do not anticipate any service disruptions, there is a slight risk that there will be a data center outage.

Holiday Quiz Bowl – Rescheduled

A few snow days will not keep us from completing the Holiday Quiz Bowl!

The final round will be played in SC 108 A&B TODAY, Tuesday, December 17 from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Tuesday will include:

·         The Championship Game and traveling trophy award ceremony.

·         Award ceremony for the group of supporters who demonstrate the best team spirit and sportsmanship (Teams,bring your cheering squads!)

·         The Championship Game will be followed by the Ugly Holiday Sweater competition.

o   Those who would like to participate should attend the Quiz Bowl on Tuesday, December 17th to have their picture taken in their “ugly” sweater. All pictures will be uploaded to the NWACC Facebook page (www.facebook.com/NWACC1) and users will be encouraged to vote for their favorite. The individual with the most “likes” will be crowned the winner. Voting will close around 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19.

Popcorn will be provided each day.  Additionally, special holiday refreshments will be provided on Tuesday by Staff Council.

Extended Hours in Library and ASC

To better serve students whose exams were rescheduled, the Library and the Academic Success Center (ASC) will be open extended hours over the next few days.

Gourmet Chocolate Truffle Flight

The Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program will be holding its first Gourmet Chocolate Truffle Flight fundraiser.  These will be a great gift for someone special or a unique stocking stuffer.  Each truffle is handmade and sales benefit culinary arts and hospitality management students.  The truffles will be available for sale or pick up on Dec. 17. Summer Efficiencies Schedule 

In order to provide significant notice regarding the Summer Efficiencies Schedule for 2014, the revised 4-day work week begins the week of May 19, 2014.  The College will return to its 5-day work week beginning August 4, 2014.  College offices will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with supervisors establishing a workable schedule with their direct reports.  Results from the summer efficiencies survey can be found at the following link. We hope this information will be helpful as you plan meetings, vacations, and other events.

Gamma Beta Phi Elmdale Food Drive

Gamma Beta Phi is collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items for children at Elmdale Elementary in Springdale.  These items will be included in snack packs that Elmdale sends home with students over the holiday break.  There is a donation box located near BH 1407 and other locations on campus.  If you would like to make a donation or for more information, please contact Mike Willard at 619-4188 or mwillard@nwacc.edu.

Holiday Quiz Bowl – Rescheduled

A few snow days will not keep us from completing the Holiday Quiz Bowl!

The remaining two days (five rounds) will be played in SC 108 A&B on Monday, December 16 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. and Tuesday, December 17 from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Tuesday will include:

·         The Championship Game and traveling trophy award ceremony.

·         Award ceremony for the group of supporters who demonstrate the best team spirit and sportsmanship (Teams,bring your cheering squads!)

·         The Championship Game will be followed by the Ugly Holiday Sweater competition.

o   Those who would like to participate should attend the Quiz Bowl on Tuesday, December 17th to have their picture taken in their “ugly” sweater. All pictures will be uploaded to the NWACC Facebook page (www.facebook.com/NWACC1) and users will be encouraged to vote for their favorite. The individual with the most “likes” will be crowned the winner. Voting will close around 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19.

Popcorn will be provided each day.  Additionally, special holiday refreshments will be provided on Tuesday by Staff Council.

Extended Hours in Library and ASC

To better serve students whose exams were rescheduled, the Library and the Academic Success Center (ASC) will be open extended hours over the next few days.

Monday, December 16 

Library: 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

ASC: 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Tuesday, December 17

Library: 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

ASC: 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

*Tutoring Services at the Washington County Center (WCC) and Math Café will continue as scheduled Monday and Tuesday.

The Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program will be holding its first Gourmet Chocolate Truffle Flight fundraiser.  These will be a great gift for someone special or a unique stocking stuffer.  Each truffle is handmade and sales benefit culinary arts and hospitality management students.  The truffles will be available for sale or pick up on Dec. 17. Farmington Center Hours of Operation

With no classes in session, Farmington Center staff hours will be 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. beginning on Wednesday, Dec. 18 through Friday, Jan. 10.

As a reminder:   Under a plan approved by the College, the Farmington Center closes each semester beginning on the second day after grades are due at the Registrar’s Office for that term and reopens one week before classes begin the next term.  This means that the Farmington Center will be closed beginning on Monday, Dec. 23 and will reopen on Monday, Jan. 6.

Signs will be posted directing anyone needing immediate assistance to the Washington County Center.

Help Desk Moving

To better serve our faculty, staff and students, the Information Technology Services Help Desk will be moving to Burns Hall, room 1136 on Dec. 18. If you are not familiar with this office, it is located near the music/art wing past the purchasing department. Gamma Beta Phi is collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items for children at Elmdale Elementary in Springdale.  These items will be included in snack packs that Elmdale sends home with students over the holiday break.  There is a donation box located near BH 1407 and other locations on campus.  If you would like to make a donation or for more information, please contact Mike Willard at 619-4188 or mwillard@nwacc.edu.

Have you checked out the Library’s newest database, The New York Times Historical with Index?  It includes full text of The New York Times from 1851 – 2010 and is indexed from 1851 – 1993 for easier searching.  PDF files include text, images, illustrations, and other graphics.  This is a great place to find primary sources!  To access New York Times Historical or any of the other databases, please visit the Library’s website at www.nwacc.edu/library and click Research Databases.

Summer Efficiencies Schedule for 2014

In order to provide significant notice regarding the Summer Efficiencies Schedule for 2014, the revised 4-day work week begins the week of May 19, 2014.  The College will return to its 5-day work week beginning August 4, 2014.  College offices will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with supervisors establishing a workable schedule with their direct reports. Because July 4th falls on a Friday this year during this summer schedule, the holiday will be observed for all employees on Monday, July 7th.

We hope this information will be helpful as you plan meetings, vacations, and other events.

Volunteer Opportunity for NWACC faculty/staff/students at The Jones Center

The Jones Center in Springdale needs volunteers for the Education/Computer Center at The Jones Center.  Volunteers will help first time users gain access to the computers answer questions about logging in, printing, and other miscellaneous questions and watch for improper use/abuse of the computers. The Jones Center’s Education/Computer Center is open Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and volunteers are needed throughout this time period.

Benefits of volunteering – If a volunteer reaches 50 hours of volunteered time, s/he will receive a free membership to The Jones Center. Volunteers may also occasionally be given free passes to swim or ice skate at The Jones Center. Anyone interested in volunteering can pick up an application at The Jones Center front desk (located inside the Main Entrance Lobby) or contact Dallas Collins, Technical Services Coordinator for The Jones Center, at dcollins@jonesnet.org, phone 479-756-8090, ext. 2198.

Due to the severe weather system currently impacting northwest Arkansas, NWACC will be closed on Friday, December 6. Weekend classes and events on Saturday and Sunday, December 7 and 8, will occur as scheduled.

The schedule for finals next week will also occur as scheduled.
